Sam's crossover from the gospel of The Soul Stirrers to his successful solo career kickstarted Southern soul in the mainstream. Almost everyone who followed in his footsteps credited him as an influence or as their favourite artist.

The big voice and bigger heart of The King of Rock 'N Soul ruled the airwaves in the 1960s and practically kept his label, Atlantic, afloat. He never really got the full amount of recognition he deserved, but those who really know their r&b can't say enough good things about him.

Here is famous house band for Stax Records (therefore creating the sound for such artists as Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, Johnnie Taylor, a young Wilson Pickett and more). However, when these musicians were left to their own devices, they brewed up some of the most groovy and happenin' southern soul classics. This *is* the Memphis sound.

Despite a rather limited voal range, few could match Otis's tenderness for the ballads and and boldness for the belters. He was also one of the best songwriters in his field.

Keb' Mo' draws heavily on the old-fashioned country blues style of Robert Johnson, but keeps his sound contemporary with touches of soul and folksy storytelling. He writes much of his own material and has applied his acoustic, electric, and slide guitar skills to jazz and rock-oriented bands in the past as well. Born Kevin Moore in Los Angeles to parents of Southern descent, he was exposed to gospel music at a young age. At 21, Moore joined an R&B band later hired for a tour by Papa John Creach and played on three of Creach's albums. Opening for jazz and rock artists such as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jefferson Starship, and Loggins & Messina helped broaden Moore's horizons and musical abilities
