Great Gospel Women
by mississippi chile
Thefirst 6 tracks are true Roots Gospel. I object to the presence of tracks 7 and 11. Placing the young white singers (Goddess bless them) alongside elder Black women who stand in a long line of innovators and nurturers of a rich African American cultural and song tradition known as Gospel music is highly disrespectful of these elder women and their legacies. And most listeners who truly grasp the depth of these women will not want to hear them followed by the comparatively thin voices which accompany them on this compilation. I was going to buy it until I realized what had been done: essentially the erasure of Blackness by drawing a direct line from the likes of Albertina Walker to someone like Nicole C. Mullen, who has by the sound of her not a clue as to Ms. Walker's body of work. A respectful compliation would stick to the line of a tradition, a genre, among those who actually participate in it, rather than those who simply usurp its title. I do suppose, however, that the price of the album is more than fair if you buy it just for the tracks of real Gospel music. Then you can erase the rest from your playlist.
Times Square Church has great music
Here's a post I swiped from another forum about that church & others in NYC (long but you're gray so I can't email it)-
If in Times Square anyone want to check out a great thundering gospel band and 100 voice choir they're the 'house band' at Times Square Church at Broadway and west 51st street.
It's held in a really gorgeous neo classical theater that the church bought about 15 years ago. Says Times Square Church outside.
The band is led by a great jazz gospel sax player, a lot of soaring solos on the ballads
