Scottish folk music

Music will once again play a large part in the annual Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Traditional Boat Festival which takes place in Portsoy on June 27-29, 2014. Drawing together a host of musicians from across Scotland as well as welcoming a number of international acts, many of whom originally hail from Scottish shores, the Festival’s musical offering will play a part in Scotland’s Year of Homecoming.

Festival favourites and newcomers alike will be appearing throughout the three day celebration of traditional boat building and sailing, music, art and culture. Bands and singers will appear across numerous stages situated in various locations around the picturesque coastal village.

The ever-popular De Kinkels will return to the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Traditional Boat Festival from the Netherlands, playing on the Harbour Stage throughout the weekend as well as at a gig in the Station Hotel in the evening of June 28. Celtic Connection award winners RURA will headline the Showcase Concert on Friday night at the Festival, bringing with them a vibrant, upbeat sound.

Allan Carr, originally from Aberdeen and now based in Philadelphia, is also due to play at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Traditional Boat Festival. A multi-instrumentalist, Allan moved away from Scotland over 20 years ago and will return to play a mixture of traditional and contemporary music from his prolific repertoire.

Folk and Robbers, hailing from Svelvik, Norway, will return to the Festival 15 years after their last performance, and promise to bring with them a mixture of pop, folk and rock mixed with some Scottish, Irish and Norwegian folk songs. Also from Norway, shanty choir Slogmaakane will be appearing across the weekend.

For some more traditional Scottish fare, the Portsoy Pipe Band and Tarves’ Chaotica will perform during the weekend. The Spiers Family, Danny Couper, Carol Anderson and Arthur Watson will be curating informal sessions in the Festival marquee, as well as running workshops on Scots songs and tunes that have been adopted around the world.

For those looking for a more interactive musical experience, the Borders-based HLI Ceilidh Band will be appearing in the Festival marquee on Saturday June 28 for a barnstorming family ceilidh. The Portsoy Bowling Club will host an open mic night, also on Saturday evening, for those that would like to show off their own musical talents.

Caroline Packman, Homecoming Scotland 2014 Director said: “The Scottish Traditional Boat Festival is a key event in the year of Homecoming, which will showcase the maritime and cultural heritage of the North East. Scotland is the perfect stage for events, and with the announcement of the packed musical programme there is even more for visitors to enjoy at the Festival this year.”

If you go to the Irish gift shop on Geary @ Stanyan, you can find plenty of traditional Scots and Irish bagpipe music.
